Definitions 3 Flashcards
What is a homology region/domain?
A region of sequence that contains no insertions or deletions.
What is IgM?
Mainly found in blood and lymph. The first antibody made when the body fights a new infection.
What is IgG?
The most common antibody. Found in blood and other body fluids. Protects against bacterial and viral infections.
What is IgA?
An antibody found in mucous membranes of the digestive tract and respiratory tract. Also found in breastmilk.
What is IgE?
Antibody that plays a role in the allergic response.
What is IgD?
An antibody that is expressed in the plasma membrane of immature B-cells. Enhances mucosal homeostasis and immune surveillance.
What are pro inflammatory cytokines?
A signaling molecule that is secreted from immune cells like T Helper cells and macrophages; promote inflammation.
What is MHC I?
Molecules expressed on immune cells; help immune cells detect foreign substances. Presents antigens that are intracellular/endogenous.
What is MHC II?
Molecules expressed on immune cells; help immune cells detect foreign substances. Presents antigens that are extracellular/exogenous.
What is endogenous antigen processing and presentation?
The process by which internally collected protein antigens are processed and presented to T cells. Affixed to MHC I and presented on the outer surface of cells.
What is exogenous antigen processing and presentation?
Exogenous antigens are degraded in vesicular intracellular compartments and loaded on MHC II molecules.
