Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
o Clinician directed approach to develop metacognitive skills and comprehension – monitoring for increasing learning skills.
o 3 basic steps
• Clinician tells client exactly which strategy will be used, why its used, and what procedures will be used to attain the strategy
• Clinician thinks outloud to demonstrate how the strategy will be used
- Clinician has students model this thinking out loud behavior
Mand Model
Much like Incidental Teaching
Clinician doesn’t have to wait for client to initiate - client need only show slight interest “Tell me what you need”
Clinician is only trying to initiate 1-word utterances
Give prompt
Incidental Teaching
Clinician arranges the setting so that things the client wants or needs to complete a project are visible but out of reach
Child initiates with request
No prompts or cues (wait)
Enhanced Milieu Teaching
For school aged kids
Same as PMT, but you use more words with more focus on syntax and morphology
Kids have 10+ words with MLUs of 1-3.5
Includes:
Mand Model
Incidental Teaching
Time delay
Focused Stimulation
Clinician carefully arranges the context of interaction so that the child is tempted to produce utterances with obligatory contexts for the forms being assessed
Vertical Structuring
Form of expansion used like focused stimulation to highlight target structures
Clinician: what do you see? Client: Lion What's he doing? Roar Yes he's roaring, the lion is roaring
