Definitions Flashcards
Learn the definitions of Aviation Terms and Acronyms.
Va
Designed manuevering speed. The maximum speed at which abrupt, full deflection, control inputs will not will not cause the aircraft to exceed its G-force limit.
Vfe
Maximum flap extended speed.
Vle
Maximum speed at which the aircraft can be flown with the landing gear extended.
Vlo
Maximum speed at which the aircraft may be flying while raising or lowering the landing gear.
Vmc
The speed below control will be lost normally due to roll or yaw divergence. It is the minimum controllable airspeed with the critical engine inoperative.
Vne
The speed that should never be exceeded due to structural failure or aeroelastic flutter or control oscillation
Vr
The speed at which the pilot initiates rotation to obtain scheduled takeoff performance.
Vno
Normal cruising speed of the aircraft. Maximum speed to be used in turbulent conditions
Vref
Reference landing speed in calm air to be used at height of 50 ft. above the landing elevation.
Vs
Stalling speed or minimum steady flight speed at which the airplane is controllable. Usually synonymous with Vs1. Varies with weight and balance.
Vso
Stalling speed or minimum steady flight speed in the landing configuration.
Vx
Best Angle of climb speed, provides the best altitude gain for horizontal distance. Usually used for clearing obstacles during takeoff.
Vy
Best rate of climb speed. Provides the most altitude for unit of time.
Vef
Speed at which the critical engine is assumed to fail during takeoff.
V1
Minimum speed in the takeoff following a failure of the critical engine at Vef at which the pilot can continue the takeoff with the remaining engines. Problems after V1 are considered inflight emergencies. V1 is a determination of balance field length and is the max speed at which the pilot must take the first action in an abort to stop the airplane.
V2
After takeoff speed following an engine failure for 2 segment climb to achieve performance specifications
Region of Reverse Command
The region of flight speeds below max endurance speed (L/D max) where a decrease in speed requires an increase in power
Vmu
The speed at which an airplane can rotate off the ground without experiencing a tail strike.
What is CAS
Calibrated airspeed is indicated airspeed corrected for position and installation error.
What is the best sequence of events to stop an aircraft upon landing
Reverse, spoilers, brakes
Why does a swept wing aircraft roll if you step on the rudder?
The advancing wing will have a larger angle of attack.
