Aerodynamics Flashcards
What do Vortex Generators do?
The provide air flow control that delays boundary layer separation by energizing the air.
What two factors affect lift in a turn?
Angle of attack and airspeed
What is the advantage of a swept wing aircraft?
Higher critical mach speed
What effect does altitude have on mach number?
Mach number increases as altitude increases
What effect does altitude have on stall speed?
TAS stall speed increases with altitude.
What causes an aircraft to hydroplane the most?
Under inflated tires.
How does CG effect range and stability?
Rearward CG increases range and stability
Why is the critical mach lower at higher altitudes?
The speed of sound is lower
What effects specific range?
Gross weight, altitude, aircraft configuration
Why does specific range increase with increase in altitude?
Greater TAS, lower air temperature, increased engine RPM, lower fuel consumption
What is the effect of cargo shifted from a forward compartment to an aft compartment?
Less stability and higher cruise speed.
What determines the optimum cruise altitude for a jet?
Gross weight at the beginning of cruise.
What is the disadvantage of a swept wing design?
Dutch roll tendency, wing tip stalls first, reduced max coefficient of lift.
What are the effects of a forward CG?
Increased stability (longer moment arm from CG to tail), lower cruise speed (more downforce from tail required), Higher stall speed (stalling angle of attack reached at a higher speed), greater elevator back pressure (more airflow required over the elevator), Good stall recovery
What are the effects of a rearward CG?
Decreased longitudinal stability, Higher cruise speed, Lower stall speed (less wing loading), Poor stall recovery
