Definitions Flashcards
What does diffusion mean?
“Diffusion is the movement of molecules from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration down the concentration gradient.”
What does osmosis mean?
In biology, osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a solution with a high concentration of water molecules to a solution with a lower concentration of water molecules, through a cell’s partially permeable membrane
What is a pure substance?
Pure substances are substances that are made up of only one kind of particle and have a fixed or constant structure.
What is a mixture?
A mixture is defined as the result of combining two or more substances, such that each maintains its chemical identity.
What is the difference between osmosis and diffusion?
In diffusion, particles move from an area of higher concentration to one of lower concentration until equilibrium is reached. In osmosis, a semipermeable membrane is present, so only the solvent molecules are free to move to equalize concentration
What is the difference between a pure substance and a mixture?
a pure substance consists only of one element or one compound. a mixture consists of two or more different substances, not chemically joined together.
What is a homogeneous mixture?
A homogeneous mixture is one whose composition is uniform throughout the mixture.
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
A heterogeneous mixture is a mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout the mixture. Vegetable soup is a heterogeneous mixture
What is the difference between a homogeneous mixture and a heterogeneous one?
- A homogenous mixture is that mixture in which the components mix with each other and its composition is uniform throughout the solution. A heterogenous mixture is that mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout and different components are observed.
