ANIMAL CELL Flashcards
WHAT IS THE CELL MEMBRANE
The cell membrane regulates the transport of materials entering and exiting the cell and acts as the cell’s structure.
What is the cytoplasm?
It acts to allow transport, maintain cell shape and structure, protection, storage and acts as the host to metabolic processes.
What is the Endoplasmic Reticulum?
The endoplasmic reticulum can either be smooth or rough, and in general its function is to produce proteins for the rest of the cell to function. The rough endoplasmic reticulum has on it ribosomes, which are small, round organelles whose function it is to make those proteins.
What is the Golgi Apparatus?
The three primary functions of the Golgi apparatus are the transport, sorting and modification of both protein and lipid, and the protein composition of the organelle reflects these functions.
What are the Ribosomes?
A ribosome is the cellular machinery responsible for making proteins.
What are Lysosomes?
They break down excess or worn-out cell parts. They may be used to destroy invading viruses and bacteria.
What is the Nucleus?
By housing the cell’s genome, the nucleus serves both as the repository of genetic information and as the cell’s control center
What is the Nucleolus?
The nucleolus is a spherical structure found in the cell’s nucleus whose primary function is to produce and assemble the cell’s ribosomes
What is the Mitochondria?
Mitochondria are membrane-bound cell organelles (mitochondrion, singular) that generate most of the chemical energy needed to power the cell’s biochemical reactions.
What is a Vacuole?
A vacuole is a membrane-bound cell organelle. In animal cells, vacuoles are generally small and help sequester waste products.
