Definitions Flashcards
what is an acid?
what is the basicity of an acid?
number of hydrogen ions which can be produced by one molecule of the acid upon ionisation
what is a salt?
ionic compound formed when a metal or ammonium ion replaces one or more hydrogen ion(s) of an acid
what is a metal carbonate?
ionic compound containing metal ion and carbonate ion
what is a base?
any metal oxide/hydroxide that react with acids to produce salt and water only (neutralisation)
what is an alkali?
soluble base that produces hydroxide ions in aqueous solution
what is the concentration of a solution?
amount of solute dissolved in 1dm^3 of solution
what are ammonium salts?
salts that contain ammonium ions
what is a saturated solution?
solution formed when the maximum amount of solute dissolves in a fixed volume of a solvent at a fixed temperature
what is a concentrated solution?
when a large number of particles of a substance is present in a fixed volume of solvent
what is a diluted solution?
when a small number of particles of a substance is present in a fixed volume of solvent
what is the strength of an acid/alkali?
the extent it ionises to produce H+ or OH- ions when dissolved in water
what is a strong acid/alkali?
an acid/alkali that ionises completely in an aqueous solution
what is a weak acid/alkali?
an acid/alkali that ionises partially in an aqueous solution
what is an oxide?
compound of oxygen and another element
