definitions Flashcards
nucleophile
an electron-rich species that can donate a pair of electrons
electrophile
an atom or group of atoms that is attracted to a region of high electron density and can accept a pair of electrons
electrophilic addition
a reaction in which a substrate is initially attacked by an electrophile, and the overall result is the addition of one or more relatively simple molecules across a multiple bond
heterolytic fission
breaking a covalent bond where one atom receives the electron pair and becomes a negatively charged ion
homolytic fission
The process of breaking a covalent within a molecule leading to the formation of radicals, each atom receives one electron from the bonding pair and both atoms become radicals
nucleophilic substitution
an electron-rich nucleophile attacks a positive charge or partial positive charge to replace an atom/ group of atoms
