Definitions Flashcards
Moment of inertia
a measure of an objects resistance to angular acceleration about a given axis.
Gravitational field
The region in space around an object where it exerts a gravitational force on an object
Conservative field
Work done in moving object between two points in field is independent of path taken
Gravitational field strength
The gravitational force acting on a unit mass at that point in the field
Gravitational potential (V)
The work done by external forces in moving a unit mass from infinity to that point
Escape velocity
The lowest velocity which a body must have in order to escape the gravitational attraction of a particular planet or other object
Einstein’s equivalence principle
It is impossible to tell the difference between a uniform gravitational field and a frame of reference that has a constant acceleration
Electric field strength
Force acting per unit positive charge in an electric field
Electric potential
The work done by external forces in bringing a unit positive charge (1C) from infinity to that point
Conservation of angular momentum
Angular momentum of a rotating body is conserved unless acted upon by an external torque
