What is a simile
When you compare one thing to another using the words “like” or “as”
Metaphor
An expression that describes something in a non-literal way
Caesura
A pause or break in a verse where one phrase ends and another phrase begins usually in the middle on a line with a dash
Enjambment
Where you end a line in poetry without punctuation to simulate a loss of control
Tone
The attitude you have towards a given subject
Tonal shift
If the mood or situation becomes dangerous then the story will shift tones from happy to scary
Iamic pentameter
A type of verse with stressed and unstressed syllables
Personification
When you give an object human characteristics
Alliteration
Where two words have the same starting sound for example “two trees”
Rhyme scheme
The pattern a poem rhymes in
Rhythm
The recurring pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in the flow of a verse
Repetition
Using the same word or phrase in a piece of writing
Onomatopoeia
When a word makes the sound it spells like “crash” or “bang”
Slang
Informal language specific to a certain person or group of people to show the personality of new characters
Colloquial language
Words that ar shortened such as “y’all” “gonna” or “wanna”
