Social Construction of Illness
idea that the way you cope and react to an illness is determined by the cultural and social interactions you have with friends and family as you grow up (socialization process)
The sick role
the idea of exiting your normal social roles and entering a new one that has its own exemptions and responsibilities.
Medicalization
the process in which the medical profession sets the standards for normal and desirable behaviors and control the undesirable ones –> the process in which illnesses are legitimized
