Defining forces Flashcards
What types of forces do humans typically encounter during movement?
What is a force?
push or pull that attempts to create a change in motion
How are forces added together?
Pythagorean theorem
What kind of tools are available for measuring forces?
strain gauge (wires), load cell (spring element)
what is a vector
has both direction and magnitude
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass = quantity of matter (kg)
Weight = negative acceleration due to gravity (newtons)
Can external forces act on an object and not cause acceleration?
Yes, if the forces cancel each other out = no move.
Explain how the force of friction changes when a force is applied to a system.
the force of friction is higher when static (not moving), but when dynamic (moving), friction force becomes less because there is less time for grooves to settle into each other.
