Defining Force Flashcards
Bending
When an object bends, the concave side has tension because it is being stretched while the concave side is being compressed smaller
Center of Mass
Point on the object where mass is (usually centre of object)
Center of Gravity
Point in a system or object where gravity acts
Compression
object becoming compacted due to pressure/ force
Contact Force
any force that required direct application in order to be enforced
Deformation
the action or process of changing in shape or distorting, especially through the application of pressure
Dynamograph
An instrument for recording the degree of muscular force
External Force
a force that is applied to a system from an outside source
Force
A push or pull (with the intent of producing motion)
Force Platform
instruments that measure the ground reaction forces generated by a body standing on or moving across them
Friction
is the resistance that another object experiences from sliding over the surface of another object
Gravity
Force of gravity: the amount of force an object feels due to the mass of earth pulling down on it
Acceleration due to gravity: the acceleration a body has under the gravitational effect of the earth
Kinetic Friction vs Static Friction
The Force of Static Friction keeps a stationary object at rest! Once the Force of Static Friction is overcome, the Force of Kinetic Friction is what slows down a moving object!
Kinetics vs Kinematics
Kinetics is the study of the forces that produce movement while Kinematics is the study of describing movement
Non-Contact Force
The force which acts on an object without coming physically in contact
(Ex. the force of gravity)
Strain Gauge
a device used to measure strain on an object
Tension
when an object (like a string) is pulled tight
What kinds of forces do humans often encounter when: running, playing football, etc.?
We are always experiencing the force of gravity. If we are outside, there may be the force applied by the wind. There is the friction force from the ground. There is the reaction force from the ground pushing back up on you. If you run into something there will also be the reaction force from that thing back onto you.
Explain how muscular forces create movement?
Muscles contract and produce a force that will move your bones and produce movement. When you move a muscle, the force of this movement passes from the muscle through its associated tendon. The tendon uses this force to initiate movement of the connected bone and associated joint.
Can an object be in motion if no external forces act on it?
No
Can external forces act on an object an not cause acceleration?
Yes, as long as the object is already moving, the forces that are causing it to move can produce a constant velodcity
Explain how the force of friction changes when a force is applied to a system
if you apply more force to on object, the force of friction will increase in order to keep the object in place. Friction will never be more than the applied force because then it would result in the object moving
