Defining Disease Flashcards
What infectious agents cause disease in humans
Bacteria
Viruses
Prions
Fungi
Protoctsta
Parasitic invertebrates
What are signs
Indications of a disease detected by the doctor but not necesssrily the late isn’t
What is an epidemic
Widespread occurrence of an infectious disease in a community at a particular time
What’s a carrier
Person or organism that’s infected with an infectious agent but don’t display any symptoms
What’s a pandemic
Epidemic of infectious disease that’s spread through human populations across a larger region
What is a host
A living cell where virus reproduces
A primary host is where the parasite reaches maturity and possibly reproduces
What’s a reservoir
Animate or inanimate source that normally harbours disease causing organisms and therefore serve as potential sources of disease outbreaks
What’s a vector
Any living organism that transmits infectious agent from one host to another
What’s antibiotics
A chemical that controls the growth of unwanted microorganisms
Only effective against bacteria
What are infectious diseases pathogens and communicable diseases
Infectious disease- disease cause by a pathogen
Pathogen - organisms which invade the body and cause harm
Communicable diseases- infectious diseases that are passed from one person to another
What’s epidemiology
The study and analysis of patterns changes and effects of health and disease conditions in defined populations
What’s aetiology
The cause of disease & factors underlying spread of disease
What is a disease
A condition with a specific cause in where parts or the whole organism is made to function abnormally or less effectively
