Longman Dictionary of Applied Linguistics defines DIDACTICS
- the study of the practices and procedures used in teaching, and the principles and beliefs that underlie them
- such practices, procedures, principles, and beliefs themselves
Methodology includes:
- study of the nature of language skills (e.g. listening, reading, speaking, writing)
and procedures for teaching them - study of the preparation of lesson plans, materials, textbooks for teaching language skills
- the evaluation and comparison of language teaching methods (e.g. the Audio-lingual method)
ELT Methodology
- Answers the question how to achieve the objectives stipulated in the curriculum.
- Teaching/learning process is bipolar, it is an interaction
- Learners are not only the objects of the process but actively contribute to it and become its subjects.
- The process is organized by the T who takes LLs needs, interests, age… to achieve the stated objectives. Teaching methods – ways helping LLs to achieve the objectives

What do you need to know or be able to do to become a good English teacher?
to have a very good command of language and communicative competence (at least B2 or C1 level)
to have explicit knowledge to be able to explain grammar, phonology, vocabulary, etc. to learners
to have knowledge of ELT methodology and teaching skills
Objectives (aims, goals)
- Communicative goals (proficiency levels)
- Cognitive goals (set of cognitive skills: induction, deduction, comparison, contrast, evaluation …)
- Formative objectives (ethical, social and personal qualities in the learner)
Time segmentation
- Long-term objectives (general objectives, e.g. for primary schools)
- Short-term objectives (specified for a semester, a year)
- Immediate objectives (set for particular lessons)
Content of ELT
- Communicative skills (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing)
- Language means (linguistic forms of realisation, e.g. phonology, vocab., grammar)
- Situations of language use (communicative situations)
- Information on culture and realia
