Subcultures are a minority part of the majority culture. Although they have committed to the wider culture, they have distinct norms and values which distinguish them as different.

Subcultures can exist in school; Jackson found anti-school subcultures amongst working class teenage peer groups. In her study she showed ‘lads and ladettes’ controlling each other’s behavior by encouraging rebellion and cheekiness by rewarding it with popularity.
