Socialisation This is perhaps the main method of social control. It teaches us society’s rules through the cultural transmission of norms and values. We ‘internalise’ the cultural expectations and they become part of our own code of values.

One example of socialisation is primary socialisation which is when our significant others socialise us, one example of this is Oakley shows how gender roles are socialised in the family by parents who talk differently to their children depending on their gender (‘big boys don’t cry’) and the activities they are channelled into (‘ballet is for girls’).

Another example is re-socialisation which is when we our socialised into new norms and values. Skelton found in a primary school in an economically deprived area The teachers regarded many of the local parents as ‘inadequate’ and so they felt the school had the important task of socialising children properly.
