Defenitions- Chemistry Flashcards
atom?
The smallest unit of an element
Consists of a nucleus in the centre and is surrounded by an electron.
Nucleus?
The centre of an atom
It is composed of protons an neutrons
It contains the most mass of an atom
Proton?
It is a positivley charged particle
It is found within a nucleus
Neutron?
It is neutral
Uncharged particle
Found within an nucleus
Electron?
Negatively charged particles
Located within shells that surround an atoms nucleus
Ionisation
Atoms: When you add or take away electrons. Changing its charge
Weighted mean
These different masses are used to calculate an average or weighted mean, which is based on the relative amounts of each type of atom. This number is referred to as the relative atomic mass and is usually not a whole number
Ductile
can be made into a wire.
Cations
Positively charged ions are called cations.
Anions
Negatively charged ions are called anions.
Iconic compounds
when atoms come in contact with each other and lose or gain electrons. Compounds formed in this way are called ionic compounds.
