List immature defences

A
  1. Acting out - tantrums (throwing things etc)
  2. Passive aggression - express in non-confrontational way (silent treatment)
  3. Denial
  4. Displacement - take feelings out on neutral 3rd party
  5. Isolation of affect - separate emotions from gruesome/troubling event (describing murder scene without any emotion)
  6. Projection - Philandering husband claims his wife is cheating (b/w 2 ppl unlike displacement)
  7. Rationalisation- Grades are not imp anyway, after failing
  8. *Reaction formation - Replacing unwanted idea with its opposite (high sexual desire - become a nun)
  9. Regression - in children
    Reversing to child like behaviour (toilet trained child bet wetting after stress/new sibling/illness)
  10. Repression - amnesia in PSTD
    Involuntary, withholding of bad thoughts
    (voluntary in suppression mature defence)
  11. Splitting - in BPD

  1. Altruism - alleviate guilt with charity, generosity
    (mafia donating money)
  2. Humor - to relieve stress
  3. Sublimation - replacing unacceptable action with more acceptable action (love violence - join military)
  4. Suppression - Voluntary withholding bad thoughts
    (Rape/child abuse victim not talking)
