List immature defences
A
- Acting out - tantrums (throwing things etc)
- Passive aggression - express in non-confrontational way (silent treatment)
- Denial
- Displacement - take feelings out on neutral 3rd party
- Isolation of affect - separate emotions from gruesome/troubling event (describing murder scene without any emotion)
- Projection - Philandering husband claims his wife is cheating (b/w 2 ppl unlike displacement)
- Rationalisation- Grades are not imp anyway, after failing
- *Reaction formation - Replacing unwanted idea with its opposite (high sexual desire - become a nun)
- Regression - in children
Reversing to child like behaviour (toilet trained child bet wetting after stress/new sibling/illness) - Repression - amnesia in PSTD
Involuntary, withholding of bad thoughts
(voluntary in suppression mature defence) - Splitting - in BPD

- Altruism - alleviate guilt with charity, generosity
(mafia donating money) - Humor - to relieve stress
- Sublimation - replacing unacceptable action with more acceptable action (love violence - join military)
- Suppression - Voluntary withholding bad thoughts
(Rape/child abuse victim not talking)
