William Douglas had begun to launch swimming., an 18 year old boy for fun picked him up and toast into the tea end of the ycma pool. he hit the water surface in a sitting position. He nearly died in the misadventure.

how did the instructor “Build a swimmer” out of Douglas

  • The instructor built a similar out of Douglas piece by piece . for three months he held him high on a rope attached to his belt he went back and forth across the pool. Fear seized the author every time the instructor chart douglas to put his face underwater and Exhale and to raise his nose and inhale .then Douglas had to kick with his legs for many weeks till they relaxed. after 7 months, the instructor told him to swim the length of the pool.

why learn swimming at Y.C.M.A

A

Douglas’s mother recommended that he should learn swimming at YCMA swimming pool because it is a safer than the river where a lot of drownings had taken place. It was only 2-3 Feet deep at the shallow end and 9 feet deep at the other end.

  • The author and his father once went to the beach of California when the author was 3 or 4. Playing in the surf of the sea the author was now down by the water and was buried in it he lost his breath and a deep fear developed in his mind. At the YCMA pool, a strong boy through him in the deep end of the pool douglas hit the water in the sitting position and slowly went to the bottom. although he was saved later but the terror stayed with him.

effect of the misadventure

A

the near death experience of Downing had a very strong impact on her psychology. CP perturbed and shaken by the whole experience. A haunting fear of water to control of his physical strength and emotional balance for many years . as he couldn’t bear being surrounded by water he was deprived of enjoying any water related activities

Why did Douglas go to Lake Wentworth in Hampshire? How did he make his terror flee?

A

Douglas was not sure whether all the terror had left him even after training from October to April and practicing till July. So he went to Lake Wentworth and swam two miles terror returned only once when he was in the middle of the lake. He put himself under water and so on nothing but bottomless water. The old sensation returned, but only for a smaller magnitude first up he laughed and rebuked terror.

After the drowning incident douglas always felt terrified near water he was deprived of enjoying water activities like canoeing, boating, swimming, fishing, etc. Fear gripped him and all this spoiled his holidays.

A

Douglas started going down gradually into the water. Petrified, so he decided to jump as soon as his feet touched the bottom of the pool. however as he jumped he did not spring upwards with the speed he had imagined. A water all around for stop only his nurse was out of water he started his downward journey once again. An irresistible force brought him down. he felt afraid and was paralyzed with fear. Terror seized him, and he trembled with fright. He called for rescue but no voice came out. After that, blackness swept over him. There was no panic. Relaxed and lost consciousness.
