Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) Flashcards
Definition
When a blood clot forms in one or more of the deep veins in the body, usually in the legs.
Can cause pain or swelling
Can be serious because blood clots in the veins can break loose.
Aetiology
Anything that prevents the blood from flowing or properly clotting can cause a blood clot:
– atherosclerosis
– high blood pressure
– diabetes
– obesity
Damage from surgery or inflammation and damage due to infection or injury
Risk factors
Age
Lack of movement
Pregnancy
Cancer
Heart failure
Clinical presentation
May be no noticeable symptoms in some cases
Leg pain and swelling (cramping or soreness can also be seen)
Change in colour on the leg (red or purple, depending on the colour of your skin)
Feeling of warmth on the affected leg
Complication:
– pulmonary embolism is a serious life threatening complication of DVT.
– if you start to experience symptoms of any of these then you may need to see medical help.
