Decon Sciences Intro Flashcards
What is a user?
Person designated by management to be responsible for the steriliser / WD
What is the chain of infection?
Infectious agent
The reservoir
Portal of exit
Mode of transmission
Portal of entry
Susceptible host
What is pseudomonas aeruginosa?
Virulence factors??
Gram negative bacilli bacteria
Have a polysaccharide extra cellular material acting as a defensive mechanism
Carbapenemase enzymes
Potential source of pseudomonas aeruginosa?
Endogenous?
Oral flora? - transient so not always there
Hands? - cross contamination
Exogenous
- water / water lines
- suction system
- aerosols
- hands
- inadequate decontamination
Who are susceptible to pseudomonas ?
Opportunistic pathogens
CF
Post op eye infections
Septicaemia in neutrophil impairment
Burn / grafts
Hospital acquired pneumonia
Catheter associated urine infections
How break chain of infection in reservoir for pseudomonas?
Avoid damp or wet conditions
Use fresh detergent / disinfectant solutions
Frequently change ultrasonic bath / denture disinfectant
Sterilised reservoir - purified water and change frequently
How break chain of infection for mode of transmission?
Hand hygiene
Type B steriliser - wrapped up prior to steriliser so avoids recontamination
How should a box of dirty instruments be transported?
Rigid sided
Leak proof
Tight fitting lid
Colour coded and clearly marked
What is sterilisation?
Process used to render product free from viable MOs
