Decline In The Extended Family Flashcards
Name the six reasons for the decline in the extended family
1) the needs for geographical mobility e.g. People are now moving away from work rather then just working on their families farm
2) higher rate of social mobility - people are now moving up and down the social hierarchy as they can move away form work and get more money
3) the growth in people’s wealth - people have become a lot more wealthier meaning that they no longer rely on kin for money
4) the growth in meritocracy - contemporary societies require more educated and skilled people for jobs, extended kin therefore have less to offer family members Such as job opportunities
5) the need to avoid possible economic and status different in a family - different lifestyles and economic different may cause conflict
6) protect family stability - lack of support from isolated kin in the nuclear family
