Improve Deck Department knowledge
Officer of the Deck (OOD)
Responsible for the ship and to the commanding officer
Conning Officer
Gives the orders to the Helm/Lee Helm and responsible to the OOD
Boatswain’s Mate of the Watch (BMOW)
Responsible for the watch team.
Helmsman/ Lee Helmsman
Steer the the ship/ makes changes as ordered by the EOT
Lookouts
Scan the surface and air for contacts and reports any contacts to the OOD on the bridge
Psychrometer
An instrument used for determining atmospheric humidity consisting of dry bulb and wet-bulb thermometers

Anchor Shackle
connects the anchor to the anchor chain

What is the Bullnose?
Most fwd hole in the bow, used for towing
What is the Pelican Hook?
Secures the anchor. Attaches the chain stopper to the anchor chain, and is tightened down by a turnbuckle
What is the Wildcat?
Hoists and lowers the anchor chain.
What is the job of the strokeman?
controls the speed of the wildcat
What is the purpose of the bits?
secures mooring lines through chocks
What is a chock?
holes on the side of the hip used to feed mooring lines. They have a smooth surface so lines don’t chafe
What is a turtleback?
Housing for anchors. They are covers for the hawse pipe
What are camelbacks?
supports for the anchor. used for riding the anchor chain
What are frogs
pad eyes (securing part for the chain stoppers)
What is the purpose of a capstan
tightens the ships mooring lines
what is a gypsy head?
a capstan turned sideways
What is the purpose of the stern dock
used for dropping off the harbor pilot and for personnel to board and exit the liberty boats
what are accommodation ladders
embark and disembark officers on liberty. we have 3
what is a davit
lifts things from the fantail to the stern dock. classified as a j-bar davit

tighten or slackens the chain stoppers
what is the safest distance from blocks, cleats, gypsy heads, capstans, etc?
as far away as possible. (approx 6 feet)
What is the role of the OOD
Responsible for the safe navigation of the ship, carrying out the POD, acts as the CO’s rep underway, ensures all shipboard evolutions are carried out

What is the role of the conning officer
Responsible for all steering and engineering orders. reports directly for the OOD
what is the role of the BMOW
In charge of the enlisted bridge watch team, responsible for all announcements, answers to the OOD

Keeps the RHIB under the davit during launch and recovery so the boat won’t drift aft

Spliced into the seapainter, Keeps it out of the water
What are the launch and recovery procedures for a RHIB
Launch: 1. Disconnect the hook 2.Aft steady line 3. fwd steady line 4.Disconnect the sea painter.
To recover: reverse order of launching
Which is stronger, double braid synthetic mooring line or three strand line
Double braid synthetic is stronger and more durable
how many mooring lines do we have, and what are their locations?
We have 12. 1-4 are located in the foc’sle, 5 is at the end of the AIMD tunnel in HB1, 6 and 7 are in the khaki smoke pit, 8 is on the officers qtrdeck, 9-12 are on the fantail

How many Fuel sending stations do we have, and what are their locations
We have 1 fuel sending station. It’s location is station 21, 01-225-stbd
how many fuel receiving stations do we have, and what are their locations
we have 3. station 5 is in deckhouse 1, station 11 is in the COs passageway, station 13 is on the officers qtrdeck
How many CONREP stations do we have, and what are their locations
we have 4. two are located in HB2, the other two are in HB3
Whistle signals for shot lines
one means we are ready to shoot. two means they are ready to recieve, three means we are shooting
What are the different colors of the T+D lines, and what do they mean
Green:0’, Red:20’, yellow:40’, blue:60’, white:80’
