DECK 4: ACID BASE STUFF (not done) Flashcards
What are the three measures we look at?
pH, CO2, HCO3
Normal pH?
acidic 7.35 - 7.45 basic
Normal CO2?
Basic 35-45 Acidic
Normal HCO3?
acidic 22-28 basic
Basic is the same as ____
Alkaline
High pH is___
over 7.45
Basic (Alkaline) - ALKALOSIS
Low pH is ________
below 7.35
Acidic - ACIDOSIS
High CO2 is _____
above 4.5, Acidic
Low CO2 is ___
below 3.5, Basic (or Alkaline)
High HCO3 is ______
above 28, Basic (or Alkaline)
Low HCO3 is _____
Acidic, less than 22
Just state whether these values are acidic or basic or neither.
ph=7, CO3=22, HCO3=23,
normal PH, Basic CO3, normal HC03
Just state whether these values are acidic or basic or neither.
ph=8.2, CO3=28, HCO3=32
pH is Basic, C03 is Basic, HCO3 is Acidic
Just state whether these values are acidic or basic or neither.
pH= 50, CO3=50, HCO3=500
pH is Acidic, CO3 is Basic, HCO3 is Acidic
Just state whether these values are acidic or basic or neither.
pH: 1 , CO2: 1 , HCO3: 1
pH is Acidic, CO2 is Basic, HCO3 is Acidic
What is compensation?
When the lungs work to offset the kidneys, or the kidneys work to offset the lungs
What does breathing fast do?
Blows off CO2, so CO2 goes down causing ALKALOSIS
What does breathing slow do?
You don’t blow of CO2, so the CO2 stays in the body. You can think of CO2 as acid, more of it in the body means the body acidic, or in ACIDOSIS
