ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
A chemical substance produced in the body that controls and regulates the activity of certain cells or organs.
HORMONES
A drug that is used to initiate labor, promote delivery of placenta and control postpartum hemorrhage.
OXYTOCIN
Produces hormoes called CORTICOSTEROIDS
ADRENAL CORTEX
Releases neurotransmitters Norepinephrine and Epinephrine.
ADRENAL MEDULLA
Increase the availability of glucose. Potent immunosuppressants used to prevent organ-transplant rejection.
GLUCOCORTICOIDS
-synthetic steroid identical to cortisol
- preferred drug for adrenocortical insufficiency
- Has mineralocorticoid actions
- has oral prep for chronic replacement; parenteral for acute
HYDROCOTISONE
drug used to diagnose Cushing’s syndrome and treatment of non-endocrine disorders.
DEXAMETHASONE
An anti-diabetic drug used to decrease glucose production by the liver; increase tissue response to insulin.
BIGUANIDES
An anti-diabetic drug used to decrease insulin resistance, increase glucose uptake and decrease glucose production in liver.
THIAZOLIDINEDIONES
It is best taken 30 minutes prior to meal.
GLIPIZIDE
Nursing intervention of this drug is to instruct client to eat within 30 minutes of taking a dose of the medication, 3 times a day.
REPAGLINIDE
The nursing administration: Instruct clients to take immediate release tablets two times per day with breakfast and dinner and to take sustained release tablets once daily with dinner.
METFORMIN HCI
An anti-diabetic drug used to increase insulin release and reduces glucagon release.
GLIPTINS
It is used for glycemic control of diabetes
mellitus (type 1, type 2, gestational) to prevent
complications.
