Deck 04_Pain Flashcards
What is the difference between acute and chronic pain?
- acute pain: less than 6 months
- chronic pain: more than 6 months. You don’t know the origin of where the pain came from. Waxes and wanes (increases and decreases) in terms of severity.
What is the difference between nociceptive and neuropathic pain?
nociceptive pain: sensory pain (cutaneous, somatic: muscle fractured bone, and visceral (organ pain–referred pain).
neuropathic pain: nerve pain
Ex. diabetic neuropathy and fantom limb pain
Identify examples of each type of pain.
-Acute pain: sore throat
-Chronic pain: endometriosis
-Cutaneous pain: papercut
-Somatic pain: Torn muscle
-Visceral pain: appendicitis
What are common biases and misconceptions about pain?
- that knowledge about opioids means the pt. is a drug seeker
- no reason for pain if no physical cause
- regularly administered analgesics leads to tolerance
- amount of tissue damage indicates pain intensity
- pain threshold and tolerance are the same for everyone
- pain is part of growing old
- pain perception and sensitivity decrease with age
- physical and behavioral signs verify pain existence and severity
- patients who fall asleep do not have pain
What are the guidelines for pain management? (give medication around the clock to keep it in the therapeutic range)
- use different types of pain-relief measures
- be proactive: provide pain-relief measures before severe pain
*use pain measures the patient believes are effective
- match measures with pain severity
- allow enough time for the measure to work
- keep an open mind
- stay on top of it.
*protect the patient
*provide information and education
