five steps of preparation
- area is defined by surgeon
- hair is clipped close to skin with 40 blade leaving margin of about 5 inches from site
- scrub for 2-3 minutes with hibiscrub using circular scrubbing technique
- spray with methylated spirits to remove oil
- drape using four corner drape technique or window drape technique

*site can be as big or small as you want
*site can be extended during surgery if needed

*can’t extend surgical site

disposable- made of plastic
-cut window of whatever size
-blood runs off it
-expensive
reusable- made from heavy cotton
-soak up blood, no run off
-expensive
-lots of washing needed
scrubbing up
- scrub hands for >/=3 mins with hibiscrub brush
- rinsed hands and elbows from tips of fingers to elbows
- taps turned off with arms
- cannot touch anything that hasn’t been surgically prepared
- sterile gowns and gloves are put on
artery forceps/haemostat
*clamping vessels and preventing bleeding
tissue forceps
*holding tissues for suturing
*can be flat headed or fat toothed
scalpel handle
for holding the scalpel blade which comes in multiple sizes
surgical scissors
has rounded end to prevent puncturing organs
*can be used to do sutures
