what is a nomothetic approach
studies human behaviour through the development of general principles. controlled large scale experiments.
ao3 for nomothetic
- reductionist
- determinist
- highly scientific
examples of a nomothetic approach
- asche’s line study
- biological approach
what is determinism
states that we cannot choose our thoughts and actions, they are determined by factors outside of our control. all behaviour is predictable
what are the two versions of determinism
hard determinism: forces outside of our control, fatalism
soft determinism: behaviour is determined but there is some room for manoeuvre
examples of determinism
- biological approach to ocd
- fight or flight
ao3 for determinism
- consistent with aims of science
- not consistent with legal system
tienari study (2004)
adopted children who lived in dysfunctional families AND had bio relatives with icd had a higher chance if developing the disorder. shows INTERACTION between nature and nurture.
diathesis stress model
- diathesis: genetic predisposition (vulnerability)
- stress: gene expressed if mixed with stressor
nurture
mind is blank slate at birth, learning and experience shape us. ENVIRONMENT
nature
- human characteristics and some aspects of knowledge are INNATE
- characteristics come from genes
