Death And The Afterlife Flashcards
What were the implications of Jesus resurrection
- a moment of hope over despair
- did not mark the end of the world rather the start of the Jesus movement and foundations of Christianity
- moment where god acted mysteriously and spectacularly
Where was Jesus teaching on life after death and the kingdom of god deeply rooted
In Jewish eschatology, especially in the teaching of Pharisees
What did Jesus teaching on death and it’s significance focus on
the idea of immorality as well as a new world order. It taught that
- his death was a sacrifice for sin
- his death prompted god to establish a new world order
- he would be raised by martyrs and saints who died before and his followers would have a place in the kingdom of god
Why was Jesus teaching ambiguous
It lead to many different interpretations on when and how the kingdom of god would be established
Matthew on kingdom of god
“ the time is fulfilled, the kingdom of god has come near”
What is parousia and what did early Christian’s think about parousia
- Parousia is the term which refers to Jesus’ return after his resurrection and the ushering if the kingdom of god
- the role of parousia is to judge the world and select those who have lived righteously to eternal life in gods renewed and restored world
- early Christian’s believed that parousia was near
What did the book of revelations believe about the kingdom of god
A time of no suffering and heavenly Jerusalem will descend to earth and a symbol of the restored world
What are the three possible interpretations of the kingdom of god
- an actual place
- a spiritual state
- symbol of the Moral life
How is the kingdom of god portrayed as a present moral and spiritual state
- Jesus own teaching sim the gospels presents the kingdom of god as a call for a spiritual and moral reform
- the kingdom of god is presented as it has already started (inaugurated eschatology)
- Jesus miracles where he cures people of blindness are signs of the age to come as shown in it by isiah
- Jesus teachings often stress the newness of the kingdom as a time to over racial prejudice and discrimination of poor and marginalised
How is the kingdom of god presented as a future redeemed state
- in other respects, Jesus teaching of the kingdom of god can be seen as a future state where the righteous will live in perfect harmony with god in the redeemed world
What does St Paul argue
St Paul argues that the resurrection of Jesus is the first sign that the fallen world is restored as now humans can now at least see and know gods face to face
- before humans were only able to see the future heavenly state through dimly or through a dark glass but now we can see a glimpse of the future
What does John the divine argue
- John the divine argeud that Jesus sacrificial death has washed away sin so the righteous can live in new Jerusalem and experience the joy of gods presence
