dealing with offending behaviour : anger management Flashcards
aims of anger management
identify what triggers anger and learn techniques to deal with it
cognitive behavioural therapy
novaco = though processes trigger emotional arousal which leads to aggressive
3 stages
- cognitive preparation = reflect on past experiences and identify what triggers anger
- skill accusation = range of techniques to deal with anger and approach situations
- application practice = practice skills through role play when an anger situation is re-enacted
keen et al (2000)
-initially prisoners didn’t take it seriously
-then they showed more self control and anger management
strength
benefits outlast behavioural modification
-BM was shown to only show superficial responses
-AM addresses the root cause of anger compared to BM
HOWEVER
-blackburn = little evidence that AM reduces recidivism - used in artificial setting and not like real life - lack ecological validity
weakness
Howells et al = little impact on Australian prisoners compared to non
HOWEVER
-worked for motivated offenders = effective in that way
weakness
success dependant
-expensive = only used highly trained professionals - need a lot of funds
-requires commitment = most are uncooperative
-most prisons don’t have enough funds
NOT AS EFFECTIVE
