Deaf Ed Vocabulary 1 Flashcards
Sensori-Neural Loss
occurs when damage to the inner ear or the auditory nerve impedes the sound message from being sent to the brain.
Conductive Loss
this occurs when something goes wrong with the outer or middle ear, impeding sound waves from being conducted or carried to the inner ear. Fluctuations in the ability to hear.
Central Auditory Processing Disorder
no specific damage to the ear itself, the neural system involved in understanding what is heard is impaired
Congenital
pertaining to a condition present at birth, whether inherited or caused by the environment. (Conductive hearing loss).
Pre-lingual Hearing Loss
someone who was born with a hearing loss or someone whose hearing loss occurred before they began to speak.
Post Lingual Hearing Loss
loss of hearing that occurs after a child has learned to speak.
Otitis Media
inflammation of the middle ear, or a middle ear infection. It occurs in the area between the tympanic membrane and the inner ear, including a duct known as the Eustachian tube. It is the MOST common cause of hearing loss in children.
Otosclerosis
abnormal growth of bone near the middle ear.
Acquired Hearing Loss
A hearing loss which appears after birth, at any time in one’s life, perhaps as a result of a disease, condition, or an injury.
Rubella
a disease caused by the rubella virus (German Measles). A common problem for babies affected by the rubella virus is hearing loss. This can vary considerably from mild to severe, and may affect one or both ears. The part of the ear which is damaged is the Corti. This is the inner ear or Cochlea which links the ear to the brain. The hearing loss is known as sensori neural.
Meningitis
a bacterial infection of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord.
Congenital Cytomegalovirus
a group of symptoms that occur when an infant is infected with the cytomegalovirus before birth.
Interval Recording
used when the observation recording of target events/behavior inside the classroom is broken down into time increments. Preferred method for a student’s IEP.
Duration Recording
monitors the percent of time that a behavior occurs during the observation period, or it can be used to calculate the average time of display for the number of times that the student showed the behavior.
Frequency Recording
a simple counting of how many times a behavior occurs during a designated period of time.
