What does DEA registration grant? How does this interact with state laws?
DEA registration grants practitioners federal authority to handled controlled substances. State laws govern the activities conduced by the registered practitioner.
Define Schedule I drugs.
High potential for abuse. No acceptable medical use in treatment in US. Lack of accepted safety for use of drug or other substance under medical supervision.
Define Schedule II drugs.
High potential for abuse which may lead to severe psychological or physical dependence.
Morphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, hydromorphone, methadone, amphetamines, pentobarbital, hydrocodone.
Define Schedule III drugs.
Potential for abuse is less than schedule I or II. Abuse may lead to moderate or low physical dependence or high psychological dependence.
Buprenorphine, telazol
Define Schedule IV drugs.
Low potential for abuse relative to schedule III. Limited physical dependence of psychological dependence.
Chloral hydrate, benzodiazepines
Define Schedule V drugs.
Low potential for abuse. Primarily preparations containing limited quantities of narcotics. Generally antitussives, antidiarrheal, and analgesics
