de La Rochefoucauld Flashcards
The nature of love
Domination, calculation, manipulation
Power struggle of who has the upper hand
Love is about self-interest
We are self absorbed
We like to do the things we like and talk about ourselves
Treat people like a possession and sometimes do things to hurt them
What we are like in our deepest selves
We act just like others if we are in their position
We are much worse than we pretend to be
We convince ourselves that we are better and believe it
The nature of friendship
Deception: we lie to our friends about the way we are– facade
Give and ask for advice: find someone to agree with us and someone to blame for things
Self service: laugh at my jokes, like my posts, useful to me
Involves sacrifice (give up things for them -> but claim for later)
Talk about our faults/self-depreciation: ego boost
Our real attitude towards death
Philosophers say not to worry about death because they themselves are worried
People can distract themselves from thinking about it but death is inevitable
Thinking about death = scary thoughts about death
- Everyone fears death, even philosophers
Other observations
Old people aren’t wise it’s just that they can’t do said thing anymore
Too old + too tired
