Songhay Tributary System

A

King had 12 service clans that he collected a son or daughter from to be in his service
One clan in particular provided bodyguards and ladies in waiting

5 royal estates provided king with weapons and ironwork
Every family on estate gave king 100 arrow heads and 100 spears

Families of 2 river groups had to provide 10 packets and dried fish and work boats that king traveled on

King attacks people that did not pay him tribute, had “infinity” footsoliders with fennel bows and poison arrows

Ming Tribtuary System

A

1408-1431 Zheng He made 6 voyages and took envoys from 30 states in south and southeast Asia to pay tribute to the Chinese emperor

Tributary system is that countries give gifts to the emperor in exchange for military posts and trade treaties

People were impressed with Ming and wanted to be a part of them because Zheng He’s voyages were showing off their advanced techonolgy (ships and add stuff and riches maybe connect to Songhai being rich too)

System allowed trade to flourish and created peace between the soceities that participated

Ottoman Millet System

A

Each Millet is in charge of their own religious rites, education, charities, justice, and social service

Jewish Millet in Istanbul led by Grand Rabbi
Eastern Orthodox Millet led by the [matriarch of Constinantonople and had power over all Slavic Christaians in the empire
Leader of each Millet reps his people in court and reports directly to the Sultan

Christians and Jews and other religions under protection of Sultan and Janissaries bc of Millets

System was consistent throughout empire and did not change with Sultan

Tolerant Mughal Rulers:
Akbars Reign

A

Instituted pruncple of universal religous tolerance called sulahkul

got rid of tax on Hindu pilfrims coming to see religous sites as well as jizya

ordered troops to protect shrines and holy places of all religions

called people of all religons into court and wanted to hear their ideas and debate with them

created combined religion called Din-i Illahi

Married a Hindu Princess

He respected Hindus and believed they could benefit his socitey with their culture

Reign of not Tolerant Mughal emperor, Jahinger and Aurangzeb

A

Janginer destroyed a Hindu temple and replaced it with a Mosque made of the same materials
He became a turning point for how Mughal leaders viewed religon and empire became less tolerant
Aurangzeb restored Orhtodox Islam to position of privledge
had soldiers destroy all new Hindu Shrines
expelled Hindus from gov postions
went to war with Rajputs semi autonomous Hindu people to the south and put them under his authory

Although the Ottomans consistently allowed worshippers of different religons to dictate their own religious practice, as power shifted between different Mughal rulers tolerance of worship changed with them, both these systems allowed their respective empires to expand their power over these religous groups.
