Day Two- Lecture, EGW 2 Flashcards
Secular 1
divides what is holy and not, a more classical definition of the secular
Secular 2
modern definition as areligious-neutral, unbiased, “objective”, wants religion out of the public square
Secularization
The push for public institutions to areligious
Secular 3
represents a secular age of contested belief where religious belief is no longer accepted as established or self-evidently true. It is possible to imagine not believing in God
Fragilization
our own faith commitment is put into question when people who lead normal lives do not believe the same beliefs.
What is the creature/creator distinction
Transcendence
Incommunicable attributes
attributes God alone possesses and does not share, cannot be transferred to creatures
Communicable attributes
attributes that can be transferred from one person to another, derivative: derived from God
Aseity (Self-Existence)
Incommunicable
God does not need humans or creation in any way though we can still bring Him joy
God being relational is Him being with the trinity, therefore He does not need us
Immutability (Unchangeableness)
Incommunicable
God is unchanging in His being, perfections, purposes, and promises. Yet God does act and feel emotions, and He acts and feels differently in different situations
Eternality (Infinity)
Incommunicable
God has no beginning, end, or succession of moments in His own being. He sees time equally vividly yet He sees events in time and acts in time
Omnipresence
Incommunicable
God does not have size or spacial dimensions, is present at every point of space with His whole being, yet God acts differently in different places
Unity (Simplicity)
Incommunicable
God is not divided into parts yet we see different attributes of God emphasized at different times. He is unified
Omniscience (all knowing)
Communicable
God fully knows Himself and all things actual and possible in one simple and eternal act
God transfers some knowledge to us but not all
Omnipotence (all powerful)
Communicable
God is able to do all that His holy will desires
We have some power
Spirituality
Communicable
God exists as a being that is not made of any matter, has no parts or dimensions, is unable to be perceived by bodily senses
we have a spiritual aspect to our identity
Truthfulness
Communicable
God is the true God and author of truth. He can be depended on fully to fulfill what He has promised
Goodness
Communicable
God is the final standard of goodness. All that God does is worthy of approval
Love
Communicable
God’s love means that God eternally gives Himself to others-to the trinity then to creation. Love is self-giving for the benefit of others
Holiness
Communicable
God is set apart from all sin and unrighteousness
He wants us to try and be holy like He is
Righteousness (Justice)
Communicable
God always acts in accordance to what is right and is then Himself a final standard of what is right
We have a chance to demonstrate this is a lesser sense
How do we learn about God?
Special (Particular) Revelation
General (Universal) Revelation
Special (Particular) Revelation
available through Scripture
General (Universal) Revelation
available to all through creation and providence
points to something but not always God
