Day 8 - 01/10/14 Flashcards
What is Simple Random Sampling?
Units are selected by random numbers?
What’s another name for groups?
Strata
What is Stratified Random Sampling?
Population is divided into STRATA, and UNITS are SAMPLED from the strata at RANDOM.
What is Systematic Sampling?
The first unit is randomly selected, and then a pattern is used to pick the other numbers in relation to the first unit selected.
What is Cluster Sampling?
Units which represent the entire population are selected and assessed.
What is Quota Sampling?
Interviewers are asked to fill in quotas about people from different STRATA on criteria such as age, gender and ethnicity.
What is Selection Bias?
Any Bias that is a result of sampling.
What is Convenience Sampling?
Sampling subjects that are convenient. (BBC)
What is Observational Sampling?
Without Interference from the researcher, an objective is studied from present ore past findings.
What is a longitudinal study?
Individuals are studied over a period of time.
What is a Cross-sectional study?
At one particular time, study a sample of individuals.
What is a Case Control Study? (Retrospective)
A group of affected individuals are compared to a group of unaffected individuals.
The groups are matched for EXTRANEOUS factors.
Define Experimental Study
The researcher MANIPULATES one variable to see how it effects the other variables.
What is the independent Variable?
The variable that is being manipulated by the researcher in an experimental study.
What is another name for independent variable?
Explanatory Variable
