Define data.
The data are the VALUES that the VARIABLE may take.
Define variable.
A variable is a CHARACTERISTICS or ATTRIBUTES that can have different VALUES.
Define random variables.
Random variables are variables which OCCUR due to random chance.
Define dataset.
A data set is a COLLECTION of data.
Define descriptive statistics.
Descriptive statistics are METHODS used to ORGANISE, SUMMARISE or PRESENT data.
Define inferential statistics.
Inferential statistics are METHODS used to GENERALISE from the SAMPLES to the POPULATION,
carrying out estimations, testing hypotheses, checking for relationships between variables, and making predictions.
Give an example of descriptive statistics.
An annual snapshot of students taken at the end of an academic session.
Given example of inferential statistics.
Playing cards/dice etc.
Define population.
A population is a COMPLETE GROUP of SUBJECTS such as
people,
objects,
items
that are being studied.
Define sample.
A sample is a GROUP of subjects chosen FROM the population i.e. A subset of the population.
Define population parameters.
Population parameters are the NUMBERS describing some CHARACTERISTICS of a POPULATION.
