Assistance Protection
You are the driver of the failed train, what information do you need to tell the signaller?
- Train ID
- Declared the train a failure and require assistance
- Exact location
- Stock type and defect
- Preference of direction of assistance
- The train will not be moved
During poor visibility and you can’t get communication with the assisting driver, what must the driver of the failed train do?
- Leave the failed train and walk 300 metres in the direction of assistance
- If there is a stop signal within 300 metres, wait there
- If there is a tunnel entrance within 300 metres, wait there
If you have failed within a tunnel and 300 metres is within the tunnel?
- Exit the tunnel at the far end and wait there
When you have arrived at the agreed location and your assisting train arrives, what must you display?
- Hand danger signal
You are the assisting train, what information will you need?
- Location of the failed train
- location of the driver of the failed train
- stock type of the failed train
- where the failed train is to be taken to
- permission to pass the signal at danger
You’re the assisting train and when proceeding towards the failed train, how must you drive?
- At caution and not exceed 25mph
Your train has divided, what train illuminations will you have on the rear of the front portion of TCB?
- Reds at rear in TBC
When can the assisting driver travel in a tunnel?
- If they have picked up the driver of the failed train OR the signaller has said the driver isn’t in there and the tunnel; is clear
When do you need to carry out emergency protection for a failed train?
- TBW
- ESW
Your train has divided, what train illuminations will you have on the rear of the front portion of Absolute Block?
- No lights at rear in Absolute Block
What is Southeastern’s policy regarding divided trains?
- They can not be recoupled
Who will arrange for additional crew for the rear portion?
- KICC
What locations can a train be driven other than the leading cab?
- Slade Green Depot
- Ramsgate Depot
- Gillingham Depot
- Strood Shunt
- In an emergency to clear the line, i.e defective controls in the leading cab
Draw out a train and ask trainees where the driver and the CP will be in a cab if driving from other than the leading cab (In a single and multiple unit)

- 5mph
