Wheels, Doors and Brake Regulations
When can you return to the platform if you have an overrun?
-Less than 400 metres
-The driver or conductor can confirm that no one has fallen from the train if a door release has been given
-There is no automatic crossing to over (unless crossing has wrong direction controls)
-Signaller has given authority
A passcom has been operated and the driver can establish the reason, what do we do?
Stop the train at first suitable location (e.g station, unless it can be established that the conductor is able to deal with the situation
A passcom has been operated and the driver can NOT establish the reason, what do we do?
Stop at the next suitable location
What would happen if you fail to operate the passcom within the preset time
Full emergency brake application
What can you do if a passcom fails to reset?
Operate the passcom isolation switch with authority with KICC/MDC
On a wheelset what is used to detect heat and fires
Hot axle box detector
Wheelflats, what do you do?
-Slight flat (tap tap tap)
-Serious flat, but no other damage (bonk bonk bonk)
-More serious flats (bang bang bang) or wheel cannot be freed
Slight flat (tap tap tap) – proceed normally
Serious flat, but no other damage (bonk bonk bonk) – advise signaller and proceed at no more than 20mph when authorised
More serious flats (bang bang bang) or wheels cannot be freed – DO NOT MOVE
If you’re being delayed for more than 10 minutes between being advised of a hot axle box and being able to examine it, what do you do?
-Tell signaller
-Contact MDC and follow instructions given
-If you are required to move to a location for a fitter to examine, proceed no more than 20mph
Reasons for a BIL to be on?
-Set of doors not fully closed
-Cab door is open
-Passcom been operated
-External INGRESS or interal EGRESS handle has been operated
-Vehicle has been selected for an emergency door release
-Certain brake faults
What type of door is used for 375/377 and networkers?
Sliding plug

Sliding

-Weather conditions
-Railhead conditions
-Weight of train

-Braking characteristics

EBS only
EBS and TIS (single unit)

-EBS only – Line speed*
-EBS and TIS (single unit) – Line speed*
-EBS and TIS ( multiple units) – 25mph
*subject to any other speed that may also apply.
Doors Locked out
You have had to operate the TIS (with authority), what must you ensure before proceeding?
-Check power is holding ALL train doors closed by physically checking the doors
-If any doors are then subsequently opened only the doors on the side of the train that were released must be physically checked by hand before proceeding
