Day 2 - Defib Flashcards
What is a cardiac arrest?
An unexpected loss of heart function
What is a heart attack?
Blockage of a coronary artery leading to cardiac muscle death.
Acute myocardial function
Can lead to cardiac arrest
What are risk factors?
Smoking Obesity Cholesterol Cardiac history Family history High BP
What are some causes?
Ischemic heart disease Congestive heart failure Cardiomyopathy Drownings Tension pneumothorax Cardiac temponade Envenomations Lethal dysrhythmias
Ventricular Fibrillation
Quivering ventricles must DEFIB!
Pulse less Ventricular Tachycardia
VT
Looks like a saw!
Firing really fast
Faster than 100bpm (150-250)
Wide QRS complexes
What must you do before you defibrillate?
No conductive environment
Ensure a non-explosive environment
Ensure no contact - ALL CLEAR
Ensure no movement
How many joules?
200
300
360
If you get a return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) you just charge to the last energy setting for successful defibrillation
9yo and above also use adult setting
Defibrillation for paediatrics?
Apply pads
8 years and below = 4J/kg
(3 X age ) + 7
6 second method
Counting how many QRS complexes in a 6 second interval then X by 10
9 QRS complexes X 10 = 90BPM
