Day 1 - Anatomy Flashcards
The two major groups of muscles in the back
Extrinsic Intrinsic
What tissue layers constitute the extrinsic back muscles?
- Superficial
- Intermediate
What are the 5 (really just 4) superficial extrinsic back muscles?
- Trapezius
- Latissimus dorsi
- Levator Scapulae
- Rhomboid Minor
- Rhomboid Major
What general functions do the superficial extrinsic back muscles perform?
Production and control of limb movements
Extrinsic Back muscles generally (not all of them) get their nerve supply from where?
Anterior rami of cervical nerves
The intermediate extrinsic back muscles are _____
- Serratus posterior superior
- Serratus posterior inferior
Possible functions of intermediate extrinsic back muscles
- More than likely - Proprioception
- Respiration
Serratus posterior superior lies deep to what muscles?
Rhomboid muscles
Serratus posterior inferior lies deep to the what muscle?
Latissimus dorsi
The intrinsic back muscles are innervated by what?
Posterior rami of spinal nerves
Function of Intrinsic back muscles
- Maintain Posture
- Control movements of vertebral column
- Intrinsic back muscles extend from what to what P to S
- What encloses the intrinsic back muscles?
- Pelvis to Cranium
- Deep Fascia
What are the thoracic and lumbar fascia called?
thoracolumbar fascia
What are the layers of the intrinsic back muscles?
- superficial
- intermediate
- deep
What are the 3 fibers (and functions) of the Trapezius
- Descending (superior) fibers - elevate the scapula
- Middle fibers - retract the scapula (pull it posteriorly)
- Ascending (inferior)- depress the scapula and lower the shoulder
