CORE’s journey of reconciliation
1947
Morgan v Virginia was de jure not de facto. 16 CORE activists planned to travel by bus from the northern states to the southern states.
Sweatt v painter
1950
Heman Sweatt wanted to go to the University of Texas law school - Texan courts decided to built an all black school instead, NAACP argued that it was inferior to the white school.
Brown v board of educated of Topeka
1954
Linda brown had to attend a far away school rather than the close by white school. Ruled that Plessy v ferguson was a contradiction in terms.
Brown II
Brown 1 led to de jure but not de facto. NAACP demanded timetable to be put in place. SC ruled that the desegregation of education should occur “ with all deliberate speed”
Montgomery bus boycott
1955-1956
Rosa parks refused to give up her seat to a white man, was arrested and fined. NAACP mounted legal case and the black people of Montgomery began a campaign of direct action. (Boycott of buses)
Browder v gayle
1956
Follow up of the Montgomery bus boycott. Outlawed the segregation of buses
Little rock
1957
Attempted to speed up school desegregation - enrolled 9 black students into an all white school. Eisenhower had to intervene to allow the children to enter the school.
Cooper v Aaron
1958
As part of little rock. Ruled that it was illegal to prevent desegregation for any reason
Greensboro sit ins
1960
Four black students refused to move from the whites only counter at woolworths. 27 students on the 2nd day, 300 on the 4th. Hugely influential.
Freedom rides
1961
Travelled from Washington, D.C. to New Orleans. Met lots of violent opposition. Forced attorney General Robert Kennedy to enforce desegregation of the interstate bus services.
Boynton v Virginia
1960
Established that the segregation of interstate buses was illegal
The Albany movement
1961-1962
Local police chemist Laurie Pritchett adopted a new approach - no retaliation = no media coverage
James Meredith and the university of Mississippi
1962
Governor of Mississippi refused to allow Meredith to enrol at the university if Mississippi. SC backed Meredith and Kennedy put pressure on governor to back down. Kennedy had to send federal troops to defend Meredith against the violent white protestors.
