Data Processing Flashcards
Define and give an example for repetitive processing
A) carrying out the same task to the same standard repeatedly
B) Robots used in computer aided manufacturing
7 Advantages of ICT methods over manual methods of processing data
- Repetitive processing
- Speed of processing
- Data storage capacity
- Speed of searching
- Accuracy and context
- Speed of data communication
- Ability to produce different outputs formats
Define and give an example for speed of processing
Carrying out many complex computer calculations in a relatively short time interval
It would be impossible to produce accurate wether forecasts for the next five days without a powerful computer
Define and give an example fo data storage capacity
Able to store an enormous amount of information in a small space
All the information on the pupils in a large school will fit on a hard drive compared to a huge number of filing cabinetsnth at would be required prior to the use of computers
Define and give an example for speed of searching
Able to find information quickly
A police check will find information on a particular car almost instantly
Define and give an example for accuracy and context
Calculations are carried out accurately
In a spreadsheet if the formula and data are correct
Then the calculations will be correct
Define and give an example for Speed of data communication
Messages sent out across the world instantaneously
An email can be sent from the UK to the USA within seconds
Define and give an example for The ability to produce different output formats
Information can be produced in tabular or graphical formats
Scientists producing a report will include data in a table and to make some of them easier to understand and interpret
7 factors that might affect the efficiency of data processing systems
- Hardware
- Software
- Testing
- Maintenance procedures
- Change in circumstances
- Speed of implementation
- Poor communication
How does Poor communication with the user affect efficiency
Results in poor understanding of user requirements
How does Hardware affect efficiency
If the system has an old slow processor will take too long to process the data and there is a cost of upgrading
How does Software affect efficiency
The software may put a big demand on the system
The software must be compatible other software systems
How does testing affect efficiency
The system must be checked in all sorts of situations to ensure it can work in normal extreme and incorrect conditions
Define maintenance procedures in regards to efficiency
Someone must be employed to ensure the data and software is kept up to date
Why does a change in circumstances affect efficiency
During development the user requirements may have changed
