Q

The use of computerised central project databases; the benefits challenges and dangers

A

what is it?
A Database which is located and stored in a single location

Benefits;

  • speeds up the communication within an organisation as all information is held in a central data base that all can access.
  • there is a higher level of transparency as in theory any team member can access any information at any point in time.
  • it can make locating information and delegating tasks much quicker

Drawbacks;

  • an organisation becomes dependant on the database so if any IT or similar issues occur this could make project delivery difficult.
  • central databases can occur high costs for a small organisation.

Q

The use of building information modelling; the benefits challenges and dangers

A

Benefits;

  • enables better planning and design as you can visualise all elements prior to construction commencing.
  • allows early design changes and ‘clash detection’ to highlight any issues early on.
  • lifetime information to the end user.

Drawbacks;

  • modelling, training and staff costs. It can be very costly to set up this software and employ or train staff members to use it effectively.
  • requires trust and collaboration from the outset and a cultural change in the industry.
  • requires early client engagement through all levels inclusive of the end users.
