data handling and analysis Flashcards
What are the 3 types of distributions of data?
Normal, positively skewed, negatively skewed.
Normal distribution
mean, median, mode all fall at the same point.
1 standard deviation = 68%
2 standard deviation = 95%
Positively skewed distribution
mode, median, mean
Decreases in value
Most people scored low i.e. it was too hard/rate of depression
Negatively skewed distribution
Mean, median, mode
Increase in value
Most score high
Strengths of quantitative data
Simple to analyse
More objective, less open to bias.
Weaknesses of quantitative data
May fail to represent real life/ lacks ecological validity
Strengths of qualitative data
Greater external validity
Weaknesses of qualitative data
Difficult to analyse
Subject to bias
Strengths of primary data
Can be designed so they can target the info they want
Weaknesses of primary data
Time and effort for researcher
Strengths of secondary data
Minimal effort, inexpensive
Weaknesses of secondary data
Variation in the quality and accuracy of data
What is meta analysis
Secondary data from large amounts of studies, which involves similar research are combined
Strengths of meta analysis
Results can be generalised across much larger populations
Weaknesses of meta analysis
Prone to publication bias
