Data Analysis Flashcards
2). Inferential statistics
Tell us the likelihood that differences are due to chance or not
Measure of central tendency
(Averages)mean, medium or mode
Gives typical value for data set
1). Descriptive statistics
Give us a general description of results ie averages and ranges
Describes differences between conditions
Measure of dispersion
Range , standard deviation
Indicates how the data are spread out
Tells you what the rest of the data is doing
Mean (best)
+ tog and divide by total
✅ it uses all values in the set, most sensitive to variation in the data
❎ can be artificially raised or lowered by an extreme value or skewed data( don’t use if outlier )
Medium
In order, find middle, if even + tog divide 2
✅ based on order of data not actual values
✅ not distorted by extreme values
❎ less sensitive to variations in the data
Mode ( worst)
Most frequent
✅ only measure suitable for summarising category/ frequency data
❎ some data there is no modal value or more than one
2 modes
Bimodal
More than 2 modes
Multi model
Dispersion
How the rest of the data relate to the central tendency and how spread out scores are
Range
Biggest - the smallest
✅ easy to calculate
❎ very easily swayed by outliers
Standard deviation
How far from the mean each score is
✅ all data is used more representative measure
❎ long time to calculate
Standard of acceptance
5% (0.05)
Anything less than this is significant and it is unlikely that the null hypothesis is true
More certain results
1% (0.01)
