1.When and in which kind of family was Defoe born?
He was born in 1660 in a family of Dissenters ( = a Protestant sect that refused the authority of the church of England) .
2.What was his education like?
He went to Newington Green ( dissenting academy) where he studied modern languages, economics and geography
his father wanted a religious career for him, but he worked as an apprentice and then set up his own business.
He suffered 2 bankruptcies.
3.His career before novels
-he was a journalist and his biggest achievement was “The Review” periodical
he wrote political essays and pamphlets ,but Queen Anne didn’t like his attitude and had him arrested
3 appearances in the pillory
–) he was meant to be degraded, but his friends threw flowers at him –) turned into a triumph
–) refuted his Whig ideas to be freed and became a secret agent for the new Government

with the money he earned he was able to have a comfortable life –) old creditors hunted him–) adventures lol
