Dairy Records Flashcards
When in a dairy cows life do most problems occur?
First 100 days
What are the 4 types of dairy records?
Written
DHIA
Dairy Comp
Milking Equipment
What ate the major components of DHIA records?
Production, Reproduction, Udder Health, Culling, Replacements
What is the rolling herd average referring to?
The average amount of milk produced in 12 months
-How much that cow makes per year
What should the herd fat % be? What do we worry about if it is low?
What do we worry about if it is high?
3.5
Low - Subacute Rumen Acidosis
High - Ketosis
What types of feed effect Herd Fat?
Oils
-Lack of fiber
-Too much pufas (polyunsaturated fatty acids)
Ex. Veggie oil and cotton seed
Why do we care about days in milk?
Tells us our ability to change the herd
Stale >210d - not much we can do to change the amount of milk
Fresh <170 days can do a lot of good
Tell us where in lactation curve they are and if the drop they are making is normal
What does stratified milk and fat production tell us?
Tells us what milk and lactation they are - fresh and peak and gives details
What is the normal rolling herd average for a dairy that milks roughly 70-80lbs per day?
24,000
What are some things that may cause a downward trend in rolling herd average?
Forage quality, heat stress, changes in management
What two categories should you actually pay attention to in the stage or lactation or stratified profiele?
Fresh and Peak (100days)
Where do cows get the nutrients needed to put fat in the milk?
Diet and from their own storage in the back
What is the number to shoot for when considering average age of first calving?
22-23 months
What is the difference between a good cull and a bad cull?
Good - got all the milk out of her and it is time to go
Bad - fresh cow down with lots of disease that should have been culled a while ago - have to bury
What are two things to consider when thinking about cull cows?
How many where culled?
When are the culled? How many DIM?
When looking at the summary of cows that entered and left the herd what 2 categories should you trust?
Dairy - sold to another farm for milk
Died - no choice died and left herd
-Rest hard to tell which category
What is one of the common reasons farms have trouble maintaining their numbers?
Cull calving - want to keep in single digits
-Make a survival curve to show producer
What should the replacement rate be on a dairy?
Ideally 1:1 but most 40% 1 year, 80% over 2 is enough to maintain herd
What 2 things can you learn from the birth summary category?
If they are having a problem with still birth/death in 24 hours/dry cow issue
If they use sexed semen
