Daily Q's W1D4 Flashcards
What are the five key principles for safe cornering?
Correct Position; Correct Speed; Correct Gear; Accelerate to maintain constant speed; To be able to stop safely in the distance you see to be clear on your side of the road.
Approaching a right bend, what position would you normally adopt?
Towards the near-side.
What are the advantages of positioning to the near-side on a right hand bend?
Safety - View - Stability.
In the absence of offside dangers what position should be adopted approaching left hand bends?
Towards the crown of the road, however no part of the vehicle should hang over the lane markings.
What are the advantages of positioning to the crown of the road on a left hand bend?
View - Stability
What do the terms ‘super-elevation’ and ‘crown camber’ mean?
Super-elevation: where the outer edge of a road curve is banked above the inner edge.
Crown Camber: where the crown of the road is elevated, causing a slope either side for water drainage.
What is the overall stopping distance at 50mph?
175ft.
What is the safe stopping distance rule?
Drive at a speed that will allow you to stop safely in the distance that you see to be clear on your side of the road.
What is the limit point In relation to the bends?
The furthest point that you have an uninterrupted view of the road surface.
Under braking where does the weight of the vehicle transfer?
The Front.
What should you aim to do in relation to your vehicles speed around a curved path? How do you achieve that?
Maintain constant speed around the bend by using accurate use of the accelerator.
When is a vehicle most stable?
When travelling in a straight line with the weight evenly distributed, and the engine is pulling but the vehicle is not accelerating.
What factors in relation to roadworthiness may affect a vehicles ability to corner?
Tyres - Tyre Pressures - Steering - Shock Absorbers - Suspension & Loading.
What is the purpose of the driving plan (4 C’s)?
Correct Position - Correct Speed - Correct Gear - ‘at the’ Correct Time.
When planning a driver should take into accounted the following (5 W’s)?
What can you see? What Cant you see? What could it be?What hazard presents greatest risk? What is things turn out differently - contingency?
